Norfolk Southern Railway

Location: Elkhart, Indiana
Architectural Design: J.A. Wagner Construction, Inc.
Project Scope: Railway yard addition

Due to our past work at the Norfolk Southern Railway yard in Elkhart, Indiana, J.A. Wagner Construction was selected to complete the pre-engineered steel building package for their proposed expansion.

Our scope of work included a Butler® pre-engineered metal building, steel erection, and installation of the reinforced fiberglass liner panel in the wash bay. The project posed many challenges—from working adjacent to live railroad tracks and small spaces to carry beam and curb installation for 13 rooftop units weighing upwards of 17,000 pounds. We were also challenged with setting runway beams and rails for a new crane, along with raising an existing bridge crane by three feet while leaving a portion of the crane in operation.

One area of the structure is used for washing locomotives and the other is a wheel truing and alignment bay. This project allowed J.A. Wagner Construction to demonstrate its more than 40 years of diverse building experience and lend its team’s expertise to a large national transportation company.
