Welch Packaging: Building A Local Economy [VIDEO]
J.A. Wagner is constructing several pre-engineered steel buildings for Welch Packaging as part of their $16 million plant and machinery investment.
By the end of January—if the weather cooperates—construction will be complete on several new buildings for Welch Packaging in Elkhart, Indiana. Design-build construction began in May on what will be a $16 million plant and machinery investment to expand Welch Packaging’s capabilities.
The largest of the new structures is a 166,785-square-foot Butler® pre-engineered metal building designed to house Welch’s new 375-foot long corrugator. The corrugator will enable Welch Packaging to produce 11,000 square feet of corrugated board per minute, which will be used in the Elkhart plant, as well as some of Welch’s additional plants throughout the Midwest. The building includes 40,000 square feet of space dedicated to rolled paper storage. Two smaller buildings add dock space and connect the two existing structures to the new steel building.

In addition, J.A. Wagner is constructing a separate 23,400-square-foot Butler® pre-engineered metal addition on the south side of Welch Packaging’s existing 49,600-square-foot structure. This new building will house additional paperboard manufacturing machinery as well as storage.
Welch Packaging was founded in 1985 as Elkhart Container. With the recent merger with American Corrugated, Welch employs more than 800 people across their 12 locations. The company is “Sustainable Forestry Initiative” certified for its efforts in responsible forestry practices. With the new addition of the corrugator, Welch hopes to add more than 100 new jobs over the next two years.
